  Limb Joint

Communication is a vital part of the human experience, and it avenues are beyond number. When words fail us, our face changes its expression, the tone of our voice fluctuates, or we make gestures that reveal the subtlety of our feelings. One of the most powerful forms of this kind of non-verbal communication is dance. It is an altogether different mechanism than words, and It can lead us to new insights about complicated emotions and ideas. The focus of this project is the concept of compromise.

The structure of the piece is simple, but can produce infinite variations. Two individuals are connected under a single garment, limited in their range of motion. With their movements restricted, they must find a way to communicate without speaking, compromising so as not to tread on each other’s feet or tumble to the ground chaotically. Inevitably, it is a struggle at first, but then the artists discover a shared goal and a rhythm that can bring them there. They synchronize and vibrate gracefully and harmoniously under their joint hood—a wonder of unplanned undulation.
